Friday night seemed mellow and relaxed, with the authorities letting things play out slow and peaceful - come show time Saturday it felt like a war zone. I saw some really open disgraceful behavior and the "vibe" was menacing:

Letters: Further concert plagued by gutter people

Gutter people a downer

It's rare these days to witness antics like those carried out by the fans of Furthur, the post-Grateful Dead group led by Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, at the Fairgrounds last weekend. It looked like every panhandler and junkie from L.A. to San Francisco came to Monterey. "These are not Deadheads," one veteran concertgoer said. "These are gutter people."

Friday night at the Motel 6 on North Fremont, the manager tried to disperse a large group in the back lot who were loitering, littering, yelling and selling drugs. Someone shoved her and then the mob surrounded her. She retreated and summoned the cops. Three times the police responded, and three times the intruders scurried off like insects, returning when the coast was clear. The manager finally gave up.

People were seen sleeping in hallways and in corners of private property. Just before midnight Saturday, someone fired eight shots in the air. By Sunday, Fairground Road was littered with empty balloons that previously contained heroin.

I have it on good authority that Mr. Weir and his band will not be asked back. And that's too bad. Amid the yelling, sirens and chaos, the music sounded pretty good.

Heroin balloons? Is that what the kids are doing nowadays?

That surprised me - I saw many "deals" going down, but I have no idea if it was heroin. What was appalling, and I'm not easily put off, was just the staggering amount of trash everywhere and people just relieving themselves whenever and wherever they wanted. The travelling hordes did not leave a favorable impression, which is too bad, because the fairgrounds make for a good site for large shows/fests. I didn't expect the standard Monterey Jazz Fest crowd, but then again, I didn't expect all the rowdy, aggressive behavior - nor Bob "singing" Mission in the Rain.

It is disgraceful. That's why Buffett has a tough time playing irvine. People lack common sense and the ability to bring a trash bag and tie it up. The Rose bowl crowd for UCLA games isn't that much better these days. I'd love to say it's college kids in both instances but sadly its adults who are lazy slobs. That's my soap box for the day. Onto an "ain't no bread in the Breadbox" from Jerry and co.

Are you sure they were not just the crowd from downtown Santa Cruz. Sounds like a regular night on my side of the bay...unfortunetly.

God, I hate that shit!! Sixteen years on - another generation in timespan - and a lost, misguided 'tribe' of pseudo-deadhead 'travellers' continues, only to spiral down deeper into the abyss. I feel sorry for the manager of that Motel. In the 70's, I never would have predicted that Deadheads would be referred to as "menacing" . . . your post reminds me too much of my last show, 7-2-95 . . . This is all so contrary to the 'leave no trace', or the old 'leave it better than you found it' attitude that we adhered to. Your description of the scene with the spent heroin balloons is really disturbing to me . . . such a waste of time, spirit and goodwill - on so many levels.

Sorry that you and the other concertgoers, as well as all of the local denizens, had to endure such base, crude and disturbing behavior. I have tried, but I guess I will never understand that type of behavior around Dead shows, the reasons and rationale escape me . . . senseless . . .

I was only kidding about the heroin, isn't it more likely that they were spent nitrous balloons? I've never heard of a heroin balloon.

I've seen heroin in small balloons - and I did see some nitrous balloons but never heard tanks. Just saw folks walking around with the full balloons and taking "hits". And I agree that it is more likely they were nitrous balloons. That said, there was simply no excuse for the mounds of trash just scattered about. I seem to recall Heads being fairly respectful of venues and self-policing by handing out trash bags and picking up. If I was a resident or merchant in close proximity to the fairgrounds, I would have been pretty pissed off.

There were tanks at the Furthur show here in 2010 - but not this year. The Phila. police were apparently not amused. I agree the amount of trash is disturbing, but I didn't see any really bad behavior, it was pretty mellow. This year, it was only the security that I'd call "menacing." The crowd was mellow both years. This year, though, it was about 400 degrees, and nobody could act any way but mellow or have a stroke.

In 2010 the shows were the same weekend as the Greek Picnic, which is a very large and traditionally rowdy event (history of violent harassment of women by drunk twentysomethings) that covers many different parts of the city. The cops were busy elsewhere during those Furthur shows, and there was a much freer atmosphere in the lot. I imagine that the Mann was closer to the center of attention this year.

a heroin balloon generally refers to a condom filled with heroin, which is then swallowed, in order to smuggle it somewhere. they stuff them with quite a bit of dope. a street dealer usually sells $10 hits which is .1 gram, or a bundle (1g, 10 hits wrapped in a rubber band) for roughly $70 - $90. they come in what are called "stamps" and look like this:
http://files.pittsburghlive.com/photos/2010-03-28/Heroin-b.jpg

just google heroin stamps and you'll see what the $10 bags look like.

sometimes they're sold in small capsules as well. there's no way the balloons found were heroin balloons. people don't buy thousands of dollars worth of dope from some dude they never met at show.

unfortunately though, i have seen the use of hard drugs increase at almost all jam shows. it used to be mostly weed, acid, shrooms, nitrous, booze. now i see those as well as ketamine, opium, coke, heroin, and molly. the hard drugs are especially popular at festivals.

more and more scumbags are invading the jam scene just for the drugs it seems. these people piss me off. next time i see someone with heroin at a show i'm takin' that shit and throwin' it out in front of them.

Its kinda of sad agreed. As a 22 year old who loves the Dead I am annoyed by many people my age. This is one reason why the Phish scene is cooler than the Dead. Not saying the music is better because I will always like the Dead better. But there is something Phish will do called Green Crew, you just chill until and clean up all the recyclables, and you get free tickets if you do it enough.

The balloons were not Heroin. Maybe a couple, but most likely Nitrous which I despise. Also it could be Jenkins or Jenkies? Some of these bums are fucking crazy. You shit and piss in a bottle put a ballon over it, put it in the sun, 10 hours later huff the fumes and you trip nutsacks.

One thing is you must distinguish between the true kids who are into the Dead, and the bums and drug dealers. I know kids who what many friends call "Gangsta Hippies", you know with the big baggy pants and shirts with Dead Emblems. They can be pretty cool, these people are a product of East Coast Jam band scene. Disco Biscuits and STS9 and others. Both pretty good--way too many fucking drugs though. I never really cared for dressing a certain way to express yourself, sure I have a couple tye dies, but even some hippie guy called me a bro, which I laughed at. I thought one of the base hippie qualities was anarchism and not conforming, and now look I don't dress hippie and I get called out.

I think you may be right about the Peeps from Santa Cruz, because the LA shows weren't as clogged up with assholes. Only they were younger LA kids, as least gave a little bit of shit concerning trash, though still loud and drunk.

But anyway, exactly the reason why kids my age go see Furthur, and are either like WTF, or kinda wowed by the scene if they meet cool people, and then see Phish and its much more Yuppies and Hipsters, but just less grimy bums and travelers, and much less sketchy. A little more appealing.

I agree and disagree. I much more prefer the furthur scene than phish. Furthur might be more drug laden but it at least has real dead heads around that can hold a conversation about the boys. You cant get that anywhere else, cept maybe dark star.

The scene in general is whack. Filled with druggie losers who care more about the party than anything, and thats pretty much true across the board for all these bands.
